Artists serious about mastering color understand the transformative value of creating color charts. This workshop will guide you through the systematic process of building charts with value gradations for the colors in your palette, enabling you to achieve a deeper mastery of color.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll:
• Learn how to systematically mix colors and create value gradations.
• Discover the unique characteristics of each color: transparency, staining power, temperature shifts, drying times, and finish (glossy or matte).
• Build confidence in your palette, gaining knowledge that will accelerate your painting skills.
While we may not complete all the charts during the workshop, you’ll leave equipped with blank charts and the knowledge to finish them independently.
We will focus on a double primary palette (a warm and cool version of each primary color plus one modifier). Below are the suggested colors, but if your palette includes alternatives, feel free to bring those—this exercise is designed to deepen your understanding of the colors you currently use.
Suggested Colors:
• Cadmium Yellow Lemon
• Cadmium Yellow Deep
• Cadmium Orange
• Permanent Red
• Alizarin Crimson
• Terra Rosa, Transparent Oxide Red, or Burnt Sienna
• Ultramarine Blue
• Cobalt Blue
• Viridian
• Titanium White (No substitutes, please. Titanium White offers superior brilliance, opacity, and mixing strength, with a dense consistency and faster drying time than Zinc White.)
Additional Supplies to Bring:
• Palette knife
• Small brush
• Mixing surface/palette
• Solvent
• Paper towels
What’s Provided: 11×14 chart boards with pre-printed grids for creating neat swatches without time- consuming taping.
This exercise, inspired by Richard Schmid’s Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting, will deepen your understanding of your palette and prepare you to advance as a painter.
Join us to unlock the potential of your colors and bring greater vibrancy and precision to your art!
This workshop will be for oils, but other opaque media is welcome as well such as Acrylic or Gouache.
