Mount St. Helens Commemoration & Flatware Program at the Art Museum

Join us at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 4:00–5:30 PM. This event commemorates the 45th anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption on May 18, 2025. To honor this historic event, the WSU Department of Art created 100 plates using Mt. St. Helens ash glazes developed in the ceramics lab. Participants rolled clay, shaped plates, and glazed them after bisque firing. Additional plates were made during ceramics classes and clay club sessions.
The culmination event features an exhibition alongside the exhibition “The Art of Food, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation.” All 100 plates will be displayed, accompanied by a program discussing the eruption’s significance. Kassie Smith, Ceramics Technician, will speak about Mt. St. Helens ash, and Mark O’English, University Archivist, will share some stories from the archives about the WSU community’s reaction to the eruption.
Plates will be available for a suggested donation, supporting regional food insecurity via Pullman’s Community Action Center. Donations can be made via credit card machine/PayPal/Venmo. Plate distribution begins at 4:00 PM; please keep plates on display until after the program’s first half.
