On Thursday, February 6, the CWU College of Arts and Humanities, the CWU Horn Club, and the CWU Music Department will host the return of the cutting-edge horn quartet, Genghis Barbie. Heralded as “the leading post post-feminist feminist all-female horn experience, the most innovative and energizing chamber ensemble of its generation and beyond,” Genghis Barbie delivers a visceral and unadulterated musical adventure. The group last performed at CWU in November of 2012, presenting arrangements of pop music from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and today. They continue to be the most versatile and expansive group on NYC’s classical/pop/rock/jazz/indie/alternative/punk/electro-acoustic scene.
Balancing individual careers in symphony orchestras in addition to their busy New York City performing schedule, the ladies of Genghis Barbie have performed at multiple International Horn Society Symposiums, premiered a solo commission at Carnegie Hall, and appeared on America’s Got Talent. Recently, their recording of “Take on Me” was featured in an episode of the HBO show “The Leftovers.” As educators, they have toured numerous universities presenting workshops, masterclasses, and lectures on musical entrepreneurship.
This group has changed the perception of the French horn as a contemporary musical instrument with their refreshing arrangements, high artistry, and high-energy performances. On February 6, the quartet of Freedom Barbie, Velvet Barbie, Tiger Barbie, and Attila the Horn will present a unique and innovative program featuring music by Queen, Whitney Houston, Chappell Roan, Brandi Carlisle, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Imogen Heap, Alison Krauss, Demi Lovato, Stevie Wonder, the Beach Boys, Eurythmics, and more!
