inD Theatre is thrilled to announce its upcoming production of “Men on Boats,” a groundbreaking play by Jaclyn Backhaus, which opens October 11, 2024. This funny, dramatic and heartfelt theatrical experience will run through October 27 at Rolling Bay Hall on Bainbridge Island. As with all of inD Theatre’s semi-professional productions designed to be accessible to all community members, it is free to attend and supported by optional donations.

“Men on Boats” reimagines the 1869 expedition of John Wesley Powell and his crew on what was the first U.S. Government-chartered cartographic and scientific investigation of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Whereas these historical figures were historically cisgender white males, the cast is made up entirely of people who are not. The play features a diverse ensemble of female-identifying, trans-identifying, gender-fluid, and/or non-gender-conforming actors portraying the expedition members, offering a thought-provoking and insightful lens on exploration and leadership.

Director Talena Laine leads this inventive production alongside assistant director Reed Viydo, promising to deliver a unique blend of humor, adventure, and reflection. The play explores themes of bravery, ambition, and the complexities of human nature, all while showcasing the indomitable spirit of those who chart new frontiers.

The cast includes an exceptional group of regional actors who bring their own energy and creativity to these historical roles. With Reese Sigman as the captain of the expedition, John Wesley Powell, and his steadfast crew members played by Chelsey Sheppard, Sarah Rodler, Meagan Kirby, Helene Minassian, Ronan Pirkle, Fiona Palazzi, Colleen Gillon, Tessa “Cricket” James and Izzy Laws, audiences can expect a vibrant and engaging portrayal that breathes new life into this adventurous tale.

Scenic designer Erik Furuheim, lighting and sound designer Eli Backer, and costume designer Dawn Janow have collaborated to create a visually evocative and immersive environment that transports the audience straight into the heart of the wilderness. Movement coach Ken Michels has worked with the cast to convey the realism of perils the expedition faced, while utilizing minimalist set pieces and props.

“Men on Boats” has garnered praise for its innovative approach and clever narrative, offering a fresh perspective on the traditional expedition story. inD Theatre is proud to bring this critically acclaimed work to the stage, promising an unforgettable experience for theatergoers.
