On Saturday, March 29, Kirkman House Museum reopens for its 2025 Season. Visitors can tour the Victorian mansion and view a special exhibit featuring vintage hats and bonnets from 1900 to the 1960s. Located three blocks from Main Street in downtown Walla Walla, the Kirkman House Museum is open weekends this spring from 10 am to 2 pm. Admission fees apply, with free entry for children under 7, NARM card holders, and U.S. military veterans.
The Kirkman House Museum is housed in one of Walla Walla’s grandest mansions. Built in 1880 by an immigrant couple from the British Isles who made their fortune as butchers purveying meat to miners, the Kirkman House is furnished with family heirlooms and period pieces illustrating daily Victorian life. After housing the Kirkman family for forty years, the mansion served as a college dormitory before being converted to apartments. There its story might have ended had local preservationists not purchased and restored the property during the 1980s and 1990s with the support of the Walla Walla community.
On display at the Kirkman House Museum until May 25 are hats and bonnets spanning 80 years of fashion history. This curated collection features elegant bonnets from 1900, sophisticated cloches from the 1920s, chic pillbox hats from the 1960s and many other remarkable styles.
